MEA DUKE: SPF

The gallery is pleased to welcome back Mea Duke for her second solo exhibition following her much-lauded sold out show in the summer of 2022. Mea Duke is a Rhode Island-based interdisciplinary artist who specializes in representational painting and printmaking. Duke’s interests come to the surface the more one uncovers the relationship between works within iconographic objects, their design, function, and materiality. Here, the line between “painting an object” and “painting as an object” is revealed. Rather than make this statement, Duke finds it more satisfying to point out these moments in iconic design language, time, and memory.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design is pleased to announce the opening of Every Picture Tells a Story on September 23, 2023, from 5:00- 7:00pm. The show spotlights the paintings of Orlando Almanza, a Cuban artist living and working in the Pacific Northwest. The artist’s rich, narrative work came to the attention of Jessica Hagen in the fall of 2022 when he was working as the artist in residence at the Newport Art Museum. The artist will be teaching a workshop on visual story telling at the museum during his upcoming visit to Newport, as well as working with Conexcion Latina Newport on the first ever Festival Latino. (These two organizations can be contacted directly for all the details.) In addition to Orlando Almanza’s work, the show will also include paintings by Lorraine Mainelli, Greg Sampl and Tom Vieth. Each artist brings their unique story to the viewer through the use of different painting styles and subject matter. Jessica Hagen states, “This exhibition is visually rich and varied. All four artists are highly skilled and incredibly creative. Shown together, the work is super-charged by the contrasting styles of paint handling and expression.” Every Picture Tells a Story is on display through October 22, 2023.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary art including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. ON VIEW SEPTEMBER 5, 2023: Jessica Hagen’s new exhibition CONFLUX

CONFLUX represents a guest curatorship by gallerist Jessica Hagen at Providence’s Dryden Gallery. Hagen established Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design in Newport, RI in 2005 and has focused on showing artwork that embraces quality, originality, and beauty. Her exhibition at Dryden Gallery features the paintings of two accomplished, mid-career American artists: Lloyd Martin and Stephen Niccolls. Martin is a Providence native and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, while Niccolls hails from the Hudson Valley and received a BFA from the School of Fine Arts, Boston and MFA from UMass Amherst. The paintings of both artists are non-representational, with Lloyd Martin’s work often being compared to music. Art critic John Goodman wrote that the artist’s paintings "achieve a Mondrianesque climax of rhythm." Stephen Niccolls work arises from a fascination with structure. Niccolls asserts, “Each painting establishes its own unique context, or world. It may have elements that evoke still-life, landscape, or portrait painting, or some combination of any of these, or perhaps something else entirely.” Jessica Hagen states, “Both artists are masters of color and composition. It is an exciting pairing with over thirty works on display, many of them large-scale. Dryden Gallery’s expansive exhibition space makes this an ideal place to launch this show.” CONFLUX will be on view through December 2, 2023, with an Artist Reception on Thursday October 12th from 5:30 - 8:00pm. Dryden Gallery is located at 1350 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence, RI with hours Monday-Saturday from 9:00 - 5:00.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary art including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. Located in the historic Point section of Newport, the gallery’s hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 - 5:00 and Sunday 12:00 - 5:00. Monday and Tuesday, the gallery is open by appointment.

ARTIST HUNT SLONEM TO EXHIBIT AT JESSICA HAGEN IN NEWPORT, RI

Jessica Hagen is pleased to welcome back the well known American artist Hunt Slonem for his fourth solo exhibition at her gallery in Newport, Rhode Island. Hunt Slonem’s Solo Exhibition opens on June 24, 2023, and will feature the artist’s colorful, expressionist paintings of bunnies, birds and butterflies, as well as a beautiful selection of flower paintings in honor of The Newport Flower Show. Hunt Slonem’s work is in over 250 museum collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as many illustrious private collections. Hunt Slonem has received extensive media attention: CBS Sunday Morning, The New York Times, ArtNews and Architectural Digest have all profiled the artist not only for his artwork, but also for his collection of historic homes that he has restored, decorated and filled with works of art. Gallerist Jessica Hagen states, “I’m so pleased to be hosting our fourth solo exhibition of Hunt Slonem’s work. It is the year of the rabbit in Chinese astrology, which is what first inspired Hunt’s iconic bunny paintings, making this show especially auspicious!”

Located in the historic Point section of Newport, Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary American art including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, furniture, and jewelry. The gallery features original works of art created by living American artists from throughout the northeast and beyond. BOSTON INTERNATIONAL FINE ART SHOW

These days, there is nothing surprising about women leading the charge and bringing change to the gallery world. Today’s women directors, curators and gallerists are risk takers. They’re active members in their communities. The landscape is collaborative rather than competitive. And they give more money to charity, often selling work for social and political causes as well. Continuing the discussion which appeared in Art New England's September/October Gallery Issue, all six gallerists join this panel to offer thoughtful, insightful and practical advice on approaching gallery representation. Bring your questions!
