Rob Diebboll is a landscape and figure painter based in Rockport, Massachusetts. He grew up in a uniquely artistic Michigan home and received his Bachelor of Arts in painting and photography from Bennington College, VT. He has now been painting on the east coast for over 40 years, working primarily with oil but often with watercolor and ink as well. Rob reveals the world at the ocean’s edge: luminous, peaceful, subtle and surprising.

By omitting extraneous details and compressing perspective, he uses simple shapes, patterns and emboldened colors to compose his interpretations. The work done en plein air responds to the immediacy of the moment, without pre-planning, with the goal of learning from what is being offered that day. While painting on location Rob also looks forward to the curiosity of children (most of all) with their open and emotional comments.

In comparison, the studio works are designed and built over days or weeks but still retain a simplicity and joy found in the smaller plein airs. The expanded space in the large works allows the viewer to be enveloped by the air, water and light. The common themes are the joy of nature, the vibration of color, a place for meditation and at times a little humor and mystery.
