ON VIEW SEPTEMBER 5, 2023: Jessica Hagen’s new exhibition CONFLUX

CONFLUX represents a guest curatorship by gallerist Jessica Hagen at Providence’s Dryden Gallery. Hagen established Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design in Newport, RI in 2005 and has focused on showing artwork that embraces quality, originality, and beauty. Her exhibition at Dryden Gallery features the paintings of two accomplished, mid-career American artists: Lloyd Martin and Stephen Niccolls. Martin is a Providence native and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, while Niccolls hails from the Hudson Valley and received a BFA from the School of Fine Arts, Boston and MFA from UMass Amherst. The paintings of both artists are non-representational, with Lloyd Martin’s work often being compared to music. Art critic John Goodman wrote that the artist’s paintings "achieve a Mondrianesque climax of rhythm." Stephen Niccolls work arises from a fascination with structure. Niccolls asserts, “Each painting establishes its own unique context, or world. It may have elements that evoke still-life, landscape, or portrait painting, or some combination of any of these, or perhaps something else entirely.” Jessica Hagen states, “Both artists are masters of color and composition. It is an exciting pairing with over thirty works on display, many of them large-scale. Dryden Gallery’s expansive exhibition space makes this an ideal place to launch this show.” CONFLUX will be on view through December 2, 2023, with an Artist Reception on Thursday October 12th from 5:30 - 8:00pm. Dryden Gallery is located at 1350 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence, RI with hours Monday-Saturday from 9:00 - 5:00.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary art including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. Located in the historic Point section of Newport, the gallery’s hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 - 5:00 and Sunday 12:00 - 5:00. Monday and Tuesday, the gallery is open by appointment.
