Francine Tint
Francine Tint is a New York–based painter whose career spans over five decades. Her practice holds a singular place within the trajectory of postwar American abstraction, bridging the gestural intensity of Abstract Expressionism with the chromatic expanses of Color Field painting. Her compositions are marked by a sustained engagement with color, mobilizing a formal vocabulary that privileges openness, immediacy, and spatial ambiguity over structural resolution. A recent development in her work, the Open Color series, introduces exposed canvas and negative space as integral compositional elements—intensifying both luminosity and spatial depth. Yet this evolution is consistent with a broader, decades-long pursuit of immersion and perceptual immediacy.
Educated at Pratt Institute and the New York Studio School, Tint began her professional life in the world of fashion and media, working as a stylist and costume designer for clients such as David Bowie, Ridley Scott, Richard Avedon, MTV, and Saturday Night Live. This early immersion in image-making and performance sensitized her to questions of surface, materiality, and visual impact—concerns that later informed the development of her painterly language.
Tint began exhibiting in the 1970s, working against the grain of a male-dominated New York art world. Her early studio visits with Clement Greenberg provided critical context for her evolving approach to abstraction, and her work has since been discussed by critics such as David Ebony and Robert C. Morgan, who have emphasized the originality and persistence of her vision.
She has been awarded two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant, and an Honorable Mention from the Butler Institute of American Art. Her paintings are held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Bass Museum of Art, the Aïshti Foundation, the Neuberger Museum of Art, the Heckscher Museum, and the Portland Art Museum.
Recent milestones in Tint’s career include the publication of her monograph, Francine Tint: Paintings, now held in the libraries of the Whitney Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, LACMA, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the New York Public Library. In parallel, she is the subject of a new documentary film, Panoramic View: Portrait of the Artist Francine Tint, directed by Pola Rapaport and filmed by Wolfgang Held, cinematographer of The Andy Warhol Diaries. The film is set to premiere at international festivals in fall 2025, including the New York Documentary Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival.
