I’ve always asked myself, what is tradition, and what does it mean and I'm usually thinking of this when I'm throwing pots on the wheel. My pottery forms typically involve a search for an historical sense of the timeless and the temporal together, to create not merely in my own generation but with a feeling for that which has come from before. I believe this to be a question of preserving through all change the identity of something pre-supposed and pre-existing, against the passage of time and in spite of it.

These are the values and meanings I wish to illuminate. I suppose that is why traditional African pots and early American folk pots have become such an inspiration to me.  I just so happen to find this   depth of voice not always present or even offered in our own extroverted material/Pop culture.

My wish is that my pots will represent the perennial nature of this imperishable entity, 'tradition', combining subject as metaphor for a much larger philosophical goal other than just the visual stimulus.

I have come to believe that ‘the form of tradition’ can illuminate (this long and sought after philosophical assent), and I believe it is no where more apparent than in the humility of the handmade pot.
