The term 'tradition' is charged with meaning today because of the multitude of ways it is conceived and observed. However, in it's proper and critical context, tradition is and always will be a realization of the authentic.

It follows then that the making of a hand-made pot is really about that pinnacle of understanding those personal nuances, private qualities, and a sense of honesty which magnifies the here and now. A great pot is conceived by this love as the connecting principle to a fuller appreciation for history, and that lineage from which it has come from before.

This accumulation of knowledge that gives presence to the physical pot itself, seems to me, to be the metaphor for a much larger philosophical goal. More than just aesthetic stimulus or physical perfection, this philosophical goal is one which quantifies itself by the values and meanings found in a deeper contemplative interiority. In my mind, the form of tradition is an assent and it is no where more apparent than in the humility that personifies the hand-made pot.
