Marty Wallace
Artist Statement
The many variables that comprise a ceramic vessel inspire me. The process of choosing the clay, working at the wheel to form the piece, glazing, and, finally, the firing itself, creates almost infinite possibilities. I search for a combination of these elements that results in a cohesive, pleasing vessel. I work in several clays, from porcelain to dark stoneware. Most of my work is wheel thrown in my studio in Concord, MA. I make my own glazes, sometimes using natural materials such as the ashes from our fireplace. I often use traditional glazes, including Nuka, Ohata, Temmoku and Celadon. My work is usually fired in a reduction atmosphere in my gas kiln. This firing method contributes a final note of uncertainty to the outcome of the work. Ceramics teaches me patience, humility, and sparks my curiosity. I have the utmost respect for fellow potters, past and present.
Bio
Marty has been studying and creating ceramics for over ten years. She began her ceramics education at the Umbrella Community Arts Center in Concord, MA. She also studied at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO. Marty has an undergraduate degree from Penn State University and an MBA from Harvard University. She worked in the tech industry in the 1980’s. For the past 30 years, Marty has been an active volunteer, serving on several boards of cultural, educational, and environmental organizations. In addition to ceramics, she enjoys many outdoor activities such as hiking, sailing, and cross country skiing. She and her husband spend their time both in Concord, MA and Newport, RI.
